We don’t always finish everything we read. And even the most hyped books in your favorite genre don’t always turn out to be winners. Sometimes, they’re just books picked up at the wrong time. Although, other times, they are books put down forever. In 2024, I encountered both.

Below are all of the books I DNF’d (did not finish) in 2024.

See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt

I had this on my tbr for years and years at this point. So when I found it for $2 at a used book sale, I grabbed it immediately. Unfortunately, it didn’t really live up to the hype. The viewpoint switches between several characters, and I found their voices much too similar, making it hard to keep track of who was who.

In the end, I never finished this one. It’s been passed along to a family member who was excited to read it, though. Hopefully, they’ll give it a place of honor on their shelves!

Ghost Radio by Leopold Gout

This is another book that’d been on my to be read pile for quite some time. The plot sounded interesting, and perhaps even speculative in some manner. However, I quit reading after just a few chapters. I couldn’t

Severence by Ling Ma

Severance is one of those books that I want to try again. I love dystopian books and stories set at the end of the world. The plot sounded fantastic, and I was excited to read it. Still am, as a matter of fact.

So why is this a DNF?

Solely structure. As it turns out, there are no quotation marks around the dialogue. This can be a great stylistic choice, and I have read books where it made total sense to cut them out. However, I do find it nearly impossible to parse books when there aren’t some sort of quotation marks. This one will have to be an audiobook. And, hopefully, one I get to soon.

Dark Constellations by Pola Oloixarac

You know, there was definitely a reason I put this one down. I remember being excited to pick it up. I remember reading several chapters. And I remember tossing it aside and returning it to the library. The actual meat of the story, though? Can’t remember a thing.
