After pouring hundreds of hours into the Elder Scrolls franchise over the past few decades, it should come as no surprise that The Elder Scrolls: The Official Cookbook by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel found its way into my hands.
The book itself is a thick tome at nearly 200 pages. The cookbook has dishes based on many of the peoples who live across Tamriel. The Nords, Redguard, Khajit—as well as anyone else you could think of—are represented. The introduction to the book has information about each of these peoples, their foods, and their holidays. However, it should be noted that the cookbook is rather Skyrim focused as opposed to a very general Elder Scrolls-themed volume. More of the familiar Skyrim dishes are included from the meme-worthy sweet roll to the simple grilled leek.
A wide variety of dishes are included. Everything from the usual entrees and side dishes to condiments, meads and other drinks can be found within. There is truly a dish for everyone in here, and a few have become household staples. Especially the Baked White River Salmon! (Just don’t tell my husband it has leeks in it because “he doesn’t like those”).
One of my favorite inclusions in the cookbook are the spice mixes. Several spice mixes are introduced early, each one based on different regions or peoples. These are included in many of the recipes that follow. After trying several, I’ve found myself using them in my everyday cooking, which makes this a valuable cookbook in itself.
Each recipe has a photo that not only displays the dish very invitingly but also is very Elder Scrolls, especially Skyrim, themed. The book itself is quite sturdy with thick, glossy pages that is easy to clean and will stay open to the page you want it on if left open on a counter as you cook.
If you’re an Elder Scrolls fan, video game player, or are just looking for something a little different and interesting, I would highly recommend picking up a copy of The Elder Scrolls: The Official Cookbook by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel.
