August has definitely been the month for readathons. The first I’ve been participating in is the NEWT’s Readathon, a readathon based on the N.E.W.T. exams from Harry Potter. The second readathon I’ll be participating in is the Women in Translation Readathon.
The River of TeethI haven’t read a book I had this much fun with in a long while. River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey is simply pure fun, filled with wonderfully memorable characters, and lots of hippos. It’s the sort of book you can get lost in, the one you can’t wait to finish but don’t want to end.
Ah, the backlog of books I’ve been itching to read. Those wonderful tomes with fantastic premises that I haven’t gotten to, the ones that stare at me from the shelf as I put them off for anime or video games or woodworking. How exactly do you choose which book comes next? What book do you choose when you’ve had fifteen you want to read next, definitely next, because they’re from your favorite author or are the next in your favorite series or this book was the one you’ve been waiting to release all year.
Hanger Vol 1
The Silent CompanionsI haven’t read a book that made me lay awake at night staring at the ceiling in fear for a very long time. The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell is a wonderful book that scared the absolute shit out of me.
A Big Ship at the Edge of the UniverseA Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe combines magic with traditional science fiction adventure in a fantastically fun adventure that all fans of genre fiction will enjoy. High stakes, tons of action, and a very memorable cast of characters make this one of the most enjoyable reads of the summer. I loved this book, and already I’m looking forward to the second book in this wonderful new series.
My Hero Academia Vol 14Here we are. August has just begun which means another volume of My Hero Academia has just been released. Here we have the conclusion to the Licensing Exam Arc and the beginning of a new one. So settle in, grab some popcorn, and let’s delve into My Hero Academia Volume 14 by Kohei Horikoshi.

This is a massive readathon with several different categories to fill and many books to read. It’s shaping up to be tons of fun, and perfect for readers who like completing some challenges and tasks during readathons. Sota's Knife Vol 1After reading Food Wars! and Space Battle Lunch Time, two extremely different food based stories, I’ve made it a point to seek out more food based manga and graphic novels. When I had a chance to read Sota’s Knife Vol. 1 by Yuichiro Sueda and Kei Honjo I jumped on it. Sota’s Knife is a wonderful manga about hard work, following your dreams, and food. Sota is a dishwasher at a restaurant run by a prominent chef. One day, Sota hopes to be just as good a cook as him, but for now he’s at the bottom of the ladder trying to gain the skills he’ll need to climb upward.
